StoKaChic : Mathematical Haute Joaillerie

This interactive installation offers an immersive experience that highlights three different forms of human intelligence: the ability to perceive beauty, to understand complexity, and to connect one with the other.
Research at the Laboratoire de Mathématiques d'Orsay on stochastic geometry led to the creation of jewellery pieces. They are shaped like cells of ideal Poisson-Voronoi tessellations in three-dimensional hyperbolic space. The installation pursues a dual objective: showcasing these mathematical jewels, and making modern abstract mathematics accessible to the general public in an intuitive way.
Rich in low-tech interactions (an « old-school animated drawing », secrets revealed under a UV torch, etc), the installation takes the form of a treasure expedition. The jewellery objects stand at the center, while visitors explore them through seven-steps path that reveals the mathematics behind their beauty. Thus, anyone can touch upon abstract mathematical concepts.
